On Tuesday, the Navy put the company on notice that it would cancel the remaining contract unless the company showed it had the financial means to finish the ship. American Ship, based in Tampa, Fla., had already laid off 1,100 people, leaving an administrative crew of about 50 people. The acting chairman of the company is George M. Steinbrenner, the majority shareholder of the New York Yankees baseball team. His family started the company more than 100 years ago.
