Supplies of newsprint have become so tight in some regions that some of nation's largest newspapers and chains are shopping for extra supplies, as well as moving to cut back on consumption; shortages have so far not led to major cuts in circulation of size of most major newspapers, but some executives in charge of buying newsprint have warned their publishers that they have to make such cuts later in year if supplies do not loosen up; J Paul de Marrais, assistant general sales manager of Great Northern Nekoosa Corp, notes most papers have not had opportunity to rebuild their inventories; Hilton J Wilson, director of newsprint and purchasing for NY Times, Douglas H McCorkindale (Gannett Co), and Edward R Padilla (Washington Post Co) comment; chart of expansion in newsprint industry (M)
